Mezzadro

Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni
1957

he Mezzadro stool by Zanotta, conceived in 1957 by Italian designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, stands as an icon of Italian design. Drawing inspiration from the Dada movement and the concept of the ready-made, it reimagines industrial components into a bold and functional piece of furniture.

The structure comprises three main elements:

  • Seat: A pressed steel sheet, lacquered in orange, red, yellow, white, or black, reminiscent of an agricultural tractor seat.

  • Support: A chrome-plated steel spring, mounted upside down to provide unexpected flexibility and comfort.

  • Footrest: A steam-treated beech wood crosspiece, inspired by boat transoms, ensuring stability and aesthetic appeal.

With dimensions of L 49 cm x D 51 cm x H 51 cm, the Mezzadro integrates seamlessly into both contemporary and classic interiors. Featured in the permanent collections of prestigious museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, it symbolizes the audacity and innovation of Italian design.
